If you can find it somehow, there was a great showing of "Real Sports" (HBO series) that covered racism in fussball (ha) overseas. more specifically in Europe.

Most of it was directed towards black soccer players, who were taunted with simian grunts and woos, even throwing bananas onto the field.

I found a brief synopsis of the airing here:
http://www.hbo.com/realsports/stories/2005/episode.105.s4.html

Again, good show if you're able to find it.

The irony is that in many ways, soccer started out and remains a "white" game. England used to dominate in it. Today, western Europe dominates--i.e., France, Italy, Germany are world powers.

Here in the USA, it is often equated to the upper white middle class and "soccer moms."

So, the crackers in Georgia don't know much about the history of the sport.

But soccer is now a truly international sport, played almost everywhere--South and Central America, the Middle East, east Asia, even the USA.

What the crackers also fail to understand is that sports do far more to unite our American society than divide it.

In my soccer playing and coaching days, I have played and coached against predominately Hispanic teams. Even an Arab team. But guess what, they were all good experiences for me, my teammates, and my players.

I've also played on soccer teams that had players from Iran, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Palestine, and even Iowa. These were great experiences. Did we always get along? No. But did we learn how to get along and work together toward a common goal? Yes.

Excellent post, Corey. Thank God Sioux Falls is more enlightened and is a "soccer community" and a welcoming community all in one.
