When we brought Gabrielle home, there's a lot of "going back to the doctor." The baby goes back after a few days to get looked over, then some tests come back, then she goes back after a few weeks for something, etc. The doctor and the baby are still pretty connected in the weeks after the birth. And then, after one visit to the doctor, I asked my wife, "So, when does she go back again?" "At her next checkup, at six months." Long pause. Then I spoke up, in near panic: "You mean we have to keep her alive for <em>six months!</em>" And I was serious. The doctors are such a big part of a baby's life right after birth, that I was a little shocked when they threw us out of the nest like that. I have a stepson, so my first baby was my wife’s second.
