Right, though I wouldn't say I was bogged down - just a case of wrong book, wrong time. I'm sure I'll get back to it, eventually - I owe it a little more attention than I ever gave it.

A good friend gave me a copy of Ford's "Independence Day" a while back. Due to a sense of obligation, I forced myself thru it, although I have to admit it was difficult at times.

If you like writing for writing's sake, Ford is great. His writing is fantastic -- unique and polished, very well done. He does a wonderful job of portraying characters and events in a dry, hilarious light. But not a lot *happens* in Independence Day, and my guess is that the same can be said of The Sportswriter. His books just aren't really page turners. And it's a bit difficult to relate to the middle-age angst thing he has going on.

All in all, I'm glad I read it, but I won't read it again, and I probably won't read any of his other stuff. There's just too much else out there to get bogged down by a writer like this.
