Life Insurance Awareness Month

March 28, 2008

Life Insurance Awareness MonthThis is about six months early (or late), but did you know that September is Life Insurance Awareness Month?

With so many Awareness Months claiming their cause, This shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s just kind of, I don’t know, disingenuous, like we’re promoting FLEX Spending Awareness Month or Flight Insurance Awareness Month.

My favorite, though, might be that the 2007 spokesperson for Life Insurance Awareness Month was Molly Shannon. Molly Shannon? What, Chris Kattan wasn’t available? Kevin McDonald was busy?

Listen. I understand the need for life insurance. I get how important it is. But a Life Insurance Awareness Month? It kind of doesn’t have the same ring as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Excuse me for thinking this, but it smacks of opportunism and commercial pandering.

The big question: I wonder what the cause ribbon looks like. And do they make lapel pins?

I think it is a good idea to have life insurance awareness month because people don’t realize that life insurance industry is also a vehicle to discipline themselve to save their monies. People thought that life insurance is just a simple life insurance. I don’t think they need any lapel pin or anything to represent. It is an annoucement to make people to be aware of how important of life insurance can do to their loves one and not just to their loves one; it also can help them to discipline to save too. The society today, people don’t know how to save any more. It is important to know that how much you save than how much you make. What’s if you live too long? or What’s if you die too soon? Make sure they have a proper planning.

I think you are totally wrong about your views on Life Insurance Awareness month. Maybe you don’t have kids or understand the importance of it. I’m a single mom with two kids and if I died accidentally today and didn’t have life insurance how would my kids survive? Life Insurance is something people don’t understand and to have a month devoted to it is a great idea. It helps people understand the importance of it and why they need it in their lives. Life insurance is for the living not the dead. It is so if you aren’t around your income still is. Maybe you should think about that before you make jokes on it. It is serious stuff.

I do have kids. And as I said, I understand the importance.

It’s not the life insurance itself - it’s the fact that an “awareness month” for a commercial product is pretty opportunistic. Not that it’s wrong, or that it doesn’t work, but that by calling it some kind of “awareness month” drops it into the same category as real issues like, you know, breast cancer, or spousal abuse, or AIDS.

If the “awareness” helps one (1) family it is a cause that is worth the time and debate.

Thanks. Awareness of life insurance has been unheard of in my parts but I believe that its important for people to understand the value life insurance and how each individuals situation basically determines which type of insurance they need.
