Oh, and Elyse is precisely right about 2 things: 1) The Brothers K is a fantastically amazing novel, and 2) the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation is the way to go.

I loves me the East of Eden. Great choice.

I haven't read the Rabbit series but as you know I have read the road (lack-of-correct-writing-technique-pun intended) I think if it was close between the road and Rabbit Angstrom then you've got to give the "W" to Steinbeck.

Good call and as someone else mentioned great concept. Would like to see more like this. Maybe I will break down a film version with young Mr. Plossl.

First of all, this concept is very interesting to me! It's a great way to strike books off your "to do list" in an interesting and engaging way -- less like a task and more like a game! :D

East of Eden is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I can't even find words to describe it -- you do quite well yourself. The honest truth is that it's a book with emotions and scenery that cannot be described and simply put into a meager synopsis. You really have to read it to understand why this book is so incredible.

In my own, well, book, the only one to rival it is The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky. If you haven't read it yet, I would highly recommend it. I again find myself in a similar predicament of not having the proper words to explain its glory. But, the caveat with translations is you must choose the right one. After much trial and error, I have pretty much concluded that Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky are the way to go, should you so decide to give it a go. :)
